Dr. Smith has served on Depomed’s Board of Directors since May 2004. Dr. Smith currently serves as Director, Executive Vice President, and Chief Operating Office for Algenol Biofuels, Inc., a private industrial biotechnology company. Dr. Smith also serves as the President of Williston Consulting, LLC, an advisory firm to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Dr. Smith is the former chairman, president and chief executive officer of Guilford Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which he co-founded in July 1993. Prior to joining Guilford, Dr. Smith was senior vice president for Business and Market Development at Centocor, Inc., a biotechnology company. Dr. Smith joined Centocor in 1988 as vice president of Clinical Research after serving on the faculty of the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins Medical School for 13 years. Dr. Smith received his M.D. degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and received training in Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Smith is a director of Adams Express Company, Petroleum & Resources Corporation, La Jolla Pharmaceutical Co. and several private companies.
